Prof. Alain Puisieux will take over as Director ofthe Research Center of the Institut Curie on September 1, 2019, succeeding Bruno Goud. He will step down from his post as Director of the Lyon Cancer Research Center, which he has led since its inception in 2011.
“I have a long-standing scientific relationship with several Institut Curie researchers, so I am looking forward to joining this magnificent institute,” explains the future Director of the Research Center, Prof. Alain Puisieux. Institut Curie’s Executive Board, with the consistent approval of the Ministry of Research and on the favorable approval of the Supervisory Board, the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute and the Scientific Commission of the Research Center, appointed him Director of Research for a five-year term, renewable once, from September 1, 2019. As a reminder, in accordance with the Institute’s statutes, a selection committee chaired by Prof. Alain Fischer, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, was set up in August 2018 to propose a successor to Genevieve Almouzni.
Alain Puisieux is familiar with Institut Curie since, in addition to completing his biology internship at Institut Curie in the late 1980s, he has been a member of the Scientific Commission of the Research Centre since 2013. After receiving his doctorate in Boston (Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA), he joined the Leon-Berard Center (CLB), a cancer control center in Lyon, as a postdoctoral fellow and then as a hospital practitioner biologist. Appointed as a professor of the University in 2001 (University Lyon 1), he created in Lyon the Inserm 590 Oncogenesis and Tumor Progression Unit, and the Cancer Research Center in Lyon (UMR Inserm 1052 – CNRS 5286 – UCBL – CLB), now composed of 26 research teams and 500 members.
A specialist in cell plasticity processes during the early stages of tumorigenesis, he is the author of more than 150 publications in international journals such as Cancer Cell, Nature, Nature Cell Biology,Nature Genetics or Nature Medicine. This work has also earned him various prestigious awards and honors, such as his appointment to the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Pharmacy and the University Institute of France.
Alain Puisieux wants to propose an ambitious vision and instill a new dynamic with his future collaborators, fully respecting the culture of Institut Curie.
Institut Curie is delighted to welcome him aboard in September 2019, his experience as the managing director of a research center affiliated with a major center for the fight against cancer, combined with his knowledge of the organization of academic research in France, as well as his own scientific expertise, are consistent with the working themes of several teams of the Research Center and are major assets for assuming the office.
